Job Description -
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced underwriter, or an underwriter with potential to move up, to take ownership of new business development across Property & Casualty lines. You will work closely with brokers and internal stakeholders to identify, shape, and secure high-quality opportunities while maintaining underwriting discipline and profitability.
Whilst our clients have a preference for a combined P&C underwriter, they would however look at someone who only writes casualty /Liability lines.
Our clients write UK mid market business with premiums from @ £10-300k average around the £50k mark.
Our clients New Business team are part of a larger P&C Team of 20 people. They all work as one team and as a senior underwriter you will be expected to help with the mentoring and training of less experienced underwriters.
Key Responsibilities -
- Underwrite new business across Property and Casualty risks in line with our clients underwriting appetite and authority levels
- Proactively identify and develop new broker relationships, driving growth through strong market engagement
- Deliver profitable new business by applying sound underwriting judgment and technical expertise
- Analyse risk exposures, terms, and pricing using data and underwriting tools
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key brokers and internal teams
- Contribute to regional business plans and growth strategies
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal governance standards
- Act as a senior referral point and mentor for less experienced underwriters where appropriate
Essential Skills -
- Proven experience in Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting, with a strong focus on new business
- Strong technical underwriting expertise and risk assessment capability
- Commercial mindset with a track record of delivering profitable growth
- Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills
- Strong analytical and decision making capability
- Deep knowledge of Property & Casualty products, coverage, and terms
- Proven ability to identify and win new business opportunities
- Strong understanding of market dynamics, competition, and broker strategies
- Strong ability to assess complex risks and exposures
- Experience with pricing, wordings, and underwriting frameworks
- Understanding of reinsurance, aggregation, and portfolio impacts
